Choosing Your Multi-Day Alaska Rafting Trip: A Guide to Wrangell-St. Elias Expeditions

Five rivers. Different characters. One question: Which trip is right for you?

Wrangell-St. Elias National Park spans over 13 million acres, making it the largest national park in the United States and six times the size of Yellowstone. Within this vast wilderness, multiple river systems cut through glacial landscapes, flow past towering peaks, and provide access to terrain that roads will never reach.

At McCarthy River Tours, we guide five distinct multi-day rafting expeditions through this park. Each trip offers different river character, different scenery, different difficulty, and different strengths. The question isn’t which trip is best (they’re all excellent), but which trip matches your specific goals, experience level, and what you’re hoping to get from days spent on Alaska rivers.

This guide breaks down each expedition to help you make that decision.

Understanding Trip Difficulty Levels

Before diving into individual trips, here’s what our difficulty ratings actually mean:

Relaxed (Class II-III): Engaging whitewater suitable for first-time rafters with adventurous attitudes. Splashy waves, some maneuvering required, but approachable with proper instruction.

Moderate (Class III to III+): More sustained whitewater with larger volume, technical channels, and rapids requiring attention. Suitable for adventurers with some previous river experience or newcomers with strong desire for genuine wilderness immersion.

Challenging (Class IV): Serious whitewater demanding previous experience, active paddling, technical precision, and comfort with the possibility of swimming in cold water. Requires mandatory safety training and swim assessment.

Now let’s look at each trip.

1. Lower Chitina (Rivers to Riches): The Kennicott-Nizina-Chitina-Copper Journey

Duration: 3 or 4 days
Difficulty: Relaxed (Class II-III)
Best for: First-time rafters, families, those wanting classic Alaska river experience without extreme difficulty

What Makes It Distinctive

The Rivers to Riches expedition connects four rivers (Kennicott, Nizina, Chitina, and Copper) into one journey, providing the most accessible multi-day Alaska rafting trip we offer. You’ll experience variety without technical difficulty overwhelming the scenery and cultural context.

Your guides double as storytellers, sharing the copper rush history that shaped this valley. You’ll float past remnants of the Copper River Northwestern Railroad, explore landscapes where prospectors sought fortune in the early 1900s, and understand how mining activity transformed this remote corner of Alaska.

Gorgeous whitewater provides fun without intimidation. The Kennicott River delivers splashy Class II-III rapids, while the Nizina adds volume and braided channels. The Chitina and Copper sections offer more peaceful floating with wildlife viewing opportunities and mountain scenery.

Trip Highlights

  • Four distinct rivers in one expedition
  • Copper rush history and railroad remnants
  • Class II-III whitewater appropriate for beginners
  • Easy access (launch from McCarthy, no bush plane required)
  • Wildlife viewing along the Copper River corridor
  • Appropriate for ages 8+

Who Should Choose This Trip

  • Families with children seeking adventure without extreme difficulty
  • First-time multi-day rafters wanting genuine wilderness without Class IV commitment
  • Groups with mixed experience levels
  • Those interested in Alaska’s mining history and cultural context
  • Travelers seeking a shorter commitment (3-4 days vs. 5-8 days)

2. Copper River Expedition: Glaciers, Wildlife, and Coastal Connections

Rainbow over the Copper River during a guided Alaska rafting expedition

Duration: 7 days
Difficulty: Moderate (Class II-III+)
Best for: Families with older children, wildlife enthusiasts, those seeking comprehensive Alaska river experience

What Makes It Distinctive

The Copper River expedition is our signature week-long journey, combining glacier viewing, exceptional wildlife encounters, unique geological features, and a conclusion at the coastal town of Cordova. This trip showcases Alaska’s diversity more comprehensively than any other single expedition we offer.

You’ll witness Childs Glacier actively calving into the river, creating waves and ice debris. Groups will hike across the surreal Bremner Sand Dunes (5 miles of Sahara-like terrain rising incongruously from Alaska wilderness), and float past historic railroad infrastructure including the iconic Million Dollar Bridge. And you’ll observe concentrated wildlife activity as bears hunt salmon, eagles gather by the hundreds, and harbor seals follow fish runs miles upriver.

The Copper River corridor supports one of Alaska’s densest wildlife populations. Daily sightings of bears, eagles, and other species are typical, not exceptional.

Trip Highlights

  • Childs Glacier calving directly into the river
  • Bremner Sand Dunes exploration
  • World-class wildlife viewing (bears, eagles, seals)
  • Historic Copper River Northwestern Railroad remnants
  • Ends in Cordova, a picturesque coastal town
  • Moderate whitewater with impressive volume
  • Appropriate for ages 10+

Who Should Choose This Trip

  • Families with children 10+ seeking week-long adventure
  • Wildlife photographers and enthusiasts
  • Those wanting comprehensive Alaska experience (glaciers, wildlife, history, varied terrain)
  • Travelers comfortable with moderate difficulty over extended duration
  • Groups seeking balance between activity and observation

3. Nizina River Expedition: Icebergs to Limestone Canyons (and Beyond)

Rafting the Upper Nizina River in Alaska - McCarthy River Tours

Duration: 4, 6, or 12 days (Source to Sea option)
Difficulty: Moderate (Class III)
Best for: Families seeking iceberg experience, photographers, those wanting scenic variety

What Makes It Distinctive

The Nizina begins unlike any other Alaska river trip. Your expedition starts with a scenic bush plane flight to Nizina Lake, where house-sized icebergs calved from Nizina Glacier drift in turquoise water. The first day is spent paddling among these ice formations, exploring glacier-kissed shorelines, and experiencing terrain more commonly associated with ocean kayaking than river rafting.

Then the lake narrows into river, and the character shifts. Class III whitewater develops through Nizina Canyon, where limestone walls rise vertically and the river compresses into technical channels. You’ll float beneath the skeletal remains of the historic Nizina River Bridge, witness countless waterfalls cascading from canyon walls, and navigate braided river sections through broad valleys.

The scenic variety is exceptional. Glacier lake, technical canyon, braided channels, and historic infrastructure create diverse visual experiences throughout.

Trip Highlights

  • Iceberg paddling on Nizina Lake
  • Bush plane access to remote wilderness
  • Nizina Canyon limestone formations
  • Historic Nizina River Bridge ruins
  • Waterfall scenery throughout
  • Class III rapids accessible to strong beginners
  • Appropriate for ages 10+

Trip Length Options

4-Day Nizina: Focuses on the lake and upper canyon. Bush plane in and out. Maximum iceberg time and canyon scenery in minimum days.

6-Day Nizina-Chitina: Extends down the Chitina River for additional perspective, braided river navigation, and wildlife viewing opportunities.

12-Day Nizina-Copper Source to Sea: Combines the Nizina expedition with the full 7-day Copper River journey. Starts with icebergs and canyon whitewater, transitions to the broader Copper River character with extensive wildlife viewing, historic railroad sites, Bremner Sand Dunes, and concludes at Childs Glacier. A comprehensive journey from glacier lake to tidewater glacier spanning multiple river systems and ecosystems.

Who Should Choose This Trip

  • Families with adventurous pre-teens and teenagers
  • Photographers seeking diverse landscapes
  • Those wanting iceberg experience without extreme difficulty
  • Travelers comfortable with bush plane logistics
  • Groups seeking moderate challenge with spectacular scenery
  • Those interested in comprehensive Source to Sea experience without technical Class IV whitewater (choose 12-day option)

4. Upper Chitina River Expedition: The Most Braided River in Alaska

Anchored raft and sunset on the Upper Chitina River.

Duration: 5, 8, or 14 days (Source to Sea option)
Difficulty: Moderate (Class III+)
Best for: Those seeking remoteness, wild bison viewing, extensive braided river navigation

What Makes It Distinctive

The Upper Chitina is our most remote expedition. We are the typically the only rafters on this section annually. You’ll launch via bush plane taxi near the terminus of Chitina Glacier and journey through landscapes where the river spans up to four miles wide in braided channels.

This trip delivers genuine remoteness. You’re truly off-grid in terrain where wildlife encounters (including wild bison herds unique to this area) are common and human presence is rare. The navigation through constantly changing braided channels requires skill and local knowledge, which is why our guides’ expertise particularly shines on this expedition.

The scenery unfolds across three mountain ranges (Wrangell, St. Elias, and Chugach), with massive glaciers (Barnard and Hawkins) visible throughout and Gibraltar Hill rising 600 feet directly from the riverbed like a stone monument.

Trip Highlights

  • Most braided river system in Alaska (channels up to 4 miles wide)
  • Wild bison herds (unique to this drainage)
  • Multiple glacier faces (Barnard, Hawkins, Chitina)
  • Gibraltar Hill geological feature
  • Class III+ whitewater with impressive volume
  • Extreme remoteness and solitude
  • Three mountain ranges visible throughout
  • Appropriate for ages 14+

Trip Length Options

5-Day Upper Chitina: Ends with bush plane pickup at Jake’s Bar. Maximum braided river experience, bison viewing, and remoteness in concentrated timeframe.

8-Day Extended Chitina: Continues down the full watershed to ground transportation. Additional days allow more time for exploration, side hikes, and deeper immersion in the braided river environment.

14-Day Upper Chitina-Copper Source to Sea: The longest expedition we offer, combining the 8-day Upper Chitina journey with the full 7-day Copper River trip. Starts in extreme remoteness with wild bison and massive braided channels, transitions to the Copper River’s wildlife concentrations and glacier scenery, and concludes at Childs Glacier. This comprehensive journey covers the full spectrum of Alaska river experiences from the most remote braided system to one of the most wildlife-rich corridors, ending at an actively calving tidewater glacier.

Who Should Choose This Trip

  • Experienced adventurers seeking genuine remoteness
  • Those fascinated by braided river systems and navigation challenges
  • Wildlife enthusiasts wanting unique bison viewing opportunities
  • Photographers seeking expansive wilderness landscapes
  • Travelers comfortable with extended time completely off-grid
  • Those wanting the ultimate comprehensive Alaska river experience (choose 14-day option)

5. Tana River Adventure: Alaska’s Premier Technical Whitewater

Tana River at dusk.

Duration: 4, 6, or 12 days (when combined with Copper River)
Difficulty: Challenging (Class IV)
Best for: Experienced whitewater rafters seeking technical rapids in remote wilderness

What Makes It Distinctive

The Tana River delivers Alaska’s most technical Class IV whitewater accessible on a commercial rafting trip. This isn’t marketing hyperbole. The rapids rival the Grand Canyon in both scale and intensity, featuring large volume, complex boulder gardens, narrow channels requiring precision, and sustained whitewater demanding active paddling throughout.

We pioneered commercial Tana River trips and maintain more experience on this river than any other outfitter. This expertise matters because the Tana is serious water requiring skilled navigation, precise timing, and guides who know every feature intimately.

The river flows beneath 16,000-foot peaks through terrain accessible only by bush plane. You’ll start with exploration of the otherworldly Tana Sand Dunes before launching into whitewater that will demand your complete attention and skill.

Trip Highlights

  • Class IV whitewater rivaling Grand Canyon rapids
  • Tana Sand Dunes exploration
  • Views of 16,000-foot peaks throughout
  • Extreme remoteness (bush plane access only)
  • Technical rapids requiring active paddling
  • Most experienced guides on this specific river
  • Multiple trip length options
  • Appropriate for ages 18+ (experience required)

Trip Length Options

4-Day Whitewater Express: Concentrated Class IV experience. Bush plane in and out. Maximum rapids, minimum days. For experienced rafters with limited time.

6-Day Classic Tana: The full Tana experience covering all major rapids and scenic sections. Bush plane in, ground transport out from Jake’s Bar.

12-Day Source to Sea: Combines 6-day Tana expedition with 7-day Copper River journey. Starts with Class IV technical whitewater, transitions to broader river character with glacier and wildlife viewing, ends at Childs Glacier. Our most comprehensive Alaska rafting expedition covering 180 miles from headwaters to glacier terminus.

Additional Considerations

Budget

Trip costs vary based on duration and logistics complexity. Shorter trips (3-4 days) are the most accessible. Week-long expeditions represent moderate investment. Extended Source to Sea journeys (12-14 days) require the most significant commitment but provide the most comprehensive experience.

Bush plane access adds to trip costs compared to ground-based launches. However, the wilderness access these flights provide is often worth the additional expense for the remoteness and scenery they enable.

All trips include meals, professional equipment (including drysuits for every guest), camping gear, and transportation as specified. There are no hidden fees or equipment rental charges beyond what’s listed in trip pricing.

Physical Fitness

All trips require reasonable fitness for getting in/out of rafts, helping with camp setup, and handling variable weather. The Tana demands higher fitness due to active paddling through sustained whitewater.

Time Available

If you have 3-4 days, consider Rivers to Riches or the 4-day Nizina or Tana options. For week-long commitments, the Copper River expedition or 5-6 day Nizina, Upper Chitina, or Tana trips work well.

For those who can commit to extended expeditions, the Source to Sea options deliver the most comprehensive Alaska river experiences:

  • 12 days: Nizina-Copper or Tana-Copper
  • 14 days: Upper Chitina-Copper (our longest and most thorough journey)

Weather Tolerance

All trips operate in Alaska mountain weather (variable and unpredictable). Longer trips increase the statistical likelihood of encountering rain, but also provide more chances for spectacular clear days. Come prepared for everything.

Group Composition

Mixed-age groups with children do well on Rivers to Riches, Copper River, and Nizina trips. Adult groups seeking challenge should consider Upper Chitina or Tana expeditions.

How McCarthy River Tours Approaches Multi-Day Expeditions

Regardless of which trip you choose, certain elements remain consistent across all our expeditions:

Small Group Sizes: Maximum 10 guests per trip. This isn’t arbitrary. Smaller groups allow flexibility, personalized attention, and genuine wilderness experience without crowd management.

Professional Equipment: Every guest receives a professional-grade drysuit. We’re the only local outfitter providing this level of cold-water protection as standard on all trips.

Experienced Guides: All guides maintain Swiftwater Rescue and Wilderness First Responder certifications. Many have been running these specific rivers for multiple seasons and know them intimately.

Quality Food: Backcountry meals feature fresh ingredients, local sourcing when possible, and actual culinary effort. You won’t eat freeze-dried packages for a week.

Customization: Private trips can adjust pacing, focus areas, and activities based on your group’s interests within the constraints of river logistics and safety.
