McCarthy River Tours & Outfitters (MRTO), the leader in Single & Multi Day River Trips and Glacier Hiking in McCarthy, Alaska & Wrangell St. Elias National Park, is seeking Qualified Day Rafting & Glacier Hike Guides.

Job Description

The Day Rafting & Glacier Guide Position is a mix of single day guided trips, river rafting on class III whitewater, safety boating, Glacial Lake SUP & Kayak Guiding & Day Glacier Hikes on the Root Glacier.  In addition, guides are scheduled for shuttle drives, improvement projects and occasional office shifts.

We seek organized, professional, self motivated candidates who can demonstrate competence in the following areas;

Responsibilities

General

  • Work shifts & tours that start as early as 7am and can last late in to the evening
  • Work in varying temperatures and conditions, the Wrangell Mountains are a rugged landscape & we can see temps that range from 40-90 throughout the summer with rain, wind, sun and snow possible
  • Study and maintain historic, geologic, botanical and , geographical knowledge related our area
  • Conduct safety oriented, informative & fun glacier tours
  • Enthusiasm for meeting new people from different nationalities & backgrounds and sharing your local knowledge & expertise with them
  • Ability to lift heavy items without constraint

Day Raft & SUP/Kayak Guiding

  • Boat Rig & De-rig
  • Guest greeting, suit up & trip orientation
  • Conduct safety oriented, informative & fun glacial lake & river trips
  • Guest pick up at lodging accommodations
  • River Shuttles
  • Daily cleaning and organization of gear
  • Assisting multi day guides with packing, rig & de-rig of Multi Day trips
  • Assure cleanliness of work areas

Glacier Hiking

  • Guest greeting, crampon fitting & trip orientation
  • Ability to hike a minimum of five (5) miles
  • Guest pick up at lodging accommodations
  • Guest shuttle to trip start
  • Daily cleaning and organization of gear
  • Assure cleanliness of work areas

Requirements

  • Outgoing, people oriented personality
  • Possess all required professional gear,  (Drysuit, Flotation Device, River Knife, Whistle, Crampons, etc.)
    • A detailed list is supplied post hire
    • successful applicants will have access to our pro-deal program
  • Minimum of one (1) year previous paddle guiding experience
  • Minimum of Wilderness First Aid (WFA), CPR & Swiftwater Rescue certifications (can be obtained post hire, we offer a Swiftwater Rescue course at the beginning of the season.
  • Ability to react calmly in fluid situations
  • Experience hiking and traveling in remote landscapes

  • We are a small company, consisting of 7-10 employees in peak season and 2-3 part time roles in the off-season
  • This is a seasonal position with full time work from May 15 to August 31st, there is additional end of season employment through September 15th with end of season bonus
  • We can accommodate varying availability schedules but give preference to applicants able to work the entire season
  • First year guides are discouraged from bringing pets, we can consider exceptions on a case by case basis and solely at the discretion of the hiring manager
  • We ask for a 2 year minimum commitment from all new staff for training and to maintain a quality experience for our customers and from season to season
