The Rivers to Riches expedition works well for first-time multi-day rafters and families with kids 8 and older. The difficulty builds gradually. You start with Class III rapids on the Kennicott to build confidence, then settle into the rhythm of river travel as you progress downstream through increasingly remote country.
This trip introduces Alaska wilderness rafting without requiring technical skills or extreme fitness. You’ll paddle when necessary, help set up camp, and spend days on the water, but the pace allows time to absorb the landscape rather than just survive it.

What to Expect: Trip Details
Day 0 starts with a mandatory 6:00 PM pre-trip meeting in McCarthy. Gear check, safety briefing, meet your guides and fellow rafters. This meeting is required—don’t miss it.
Day 1 launches at 10:00 AM from the Kennicott River put-in. The first rapids come quickly—Class III whitewater that gets your attention and builds crew coordination. From the Kennicott you transition to the Nizina River and enter the canyon. First camp is on the Chitina River after the Nizina confluence.
Subsequent days follow the Chitina’s braided channels downstream. You’ll paddle when necessary to navigate around obstacles or maintain position. Much of the time the current does the work. Camps are on gravel bars with mountain views. Meals are prepared by guides using camp kitchen setups.
Final day ends with the Copper River confluence and take-out around noon.
