Welcome to McCarthy, Alaska
Your wilderness journey begins in historic McCarthy. Join us at 6:00 PM for the mandatory pre-trip meeting at our main office. Meet your guides and fellow adventurers while reviewing gear and preparing for tomorrow’s flight into glacier country.
Nizina Lake Icebergs
The adventure starts with a morning bush plane flight to Nizina Lake. House-sized icebergs drift in the shadow of surrounding peaks, creating an otherworldly landscape that shifts throughout the day as ice repositions.
After establishing camp, you’ll paddle among the icebergs. The ancient ice creates channels that open and close based on wind and current patterns. Some groups search for remnants of the area’s trapping history, including traces of old cabins. Others focus on photography or simply experiencing the surreal quiet of a glacier lake.
Afternoon option: hike the Doubtful Creek drainage for elevated views of the lake and surrounding mountains.
First Rapids and Waterfall
Launch onto the Nizina River itself. The chocolate-brown water immediately shows its character with Class III rapids that require attention but remain accessible. The color comes from fine glacial silt suspended in the water, constantly grinding rocks into finer particles.
Mid-day break: hike to a substantial waterfall, one of countless cascades feeding the river from canyon walls. The sound of falling water becomes a persistent backdrop throughout the canyon sections.

Canyon Country

The excitement builds through Nizina Canyon, a sustained whitewater section that demands focused paddling before the river calms. Camp upstream of the Chitina confluence, where two major rivers merge.
Final Float/Flight (4 day) OR Joining the Chitina (6 day)
Short morning float to the confluence area. Your bush plane arrives at the riverside airstrip mid-day for the flight back to McCarthy. The aerial perspective shows how the river system connects, revealing patterns invisible from water level.
For those continuing on, we’ll merge onto the Chitina River, where the waterway doubles in size. The character changes noticeably. Broader channels, sweeping views, extensive gravel bars. The scale shifts from intimate canyons to open valleys where you can see mountains in all directions.
Wildlife and History
Pass the Tebay River, where clear water meets the glacier-fed main stem. This mixing zone attracts bears fishing for salmon. The Kuskulana River Delta provides habitat for diverse wildlife and reveals historical sites from the copper rush era.

Join the Copper River for your final day on the water. Float past traditional fish wheels and contemporary dipnetters practicing salmon harvesting methods that span generations. Arrive at O’Brien Creek in Chitina by noon, completing your journey through varied river country.
