Days three starts early with a hot breakfast from The Roadside Potatohead, a McCarthy institution and widely considered the best Breakfast Burritto in town, while we meet the Pilots and load the planes for our airplane shuttle to our Put-In on the Banks of the Tana River. When we land, we’ll take a few minutes to listen to the sound of the plane slowly drifting into the distance and get used to the sounds of the River and the Breeze as we rig our boats, explore the area and head downstream to our camp for the night. At camp, we will get our moving home set up, go through a thorough camp familiarization and enjoy a nice dinner sitting around the nights fire.
The morning starts with a warm drink and filling breakfast while we prepare for the days river journey. The scenery of the Upper Tana supplied ample photo ops as we make our way through the river braids that characterize this stretch of the water. As we break at the Geographically spectacular Tana River Sand Dunes for lunch and a hike to the top of the Dunes, the river channelizes and begins its approach towards the big rapids ahead. After lunch and Dune exploration, we will encounter our first rapids of the trip, a long wave train with Class III reactionary waves at the bottom that make for some fun boat maneuvering. From this point on the Tana is primarily a single channel as it winds its way down through the Tana Canyon. As we near camp, we here the rumbles of Granite Rapids and into the first large waves of the trip. Down stream from here, our night 2 camp awaitsright by the mouth of Granite Creek and just above the first significant rapids of the next day.
Today is the Big Water day! As breakfast and hot drinks are devoured, your guides will be busily preparing the boats for the days ride, with rapids like “The On Ramp,” “Freeway,” “Tubby’s Tilt,” and “True Violence” waiting downstream. The rapids that make up this stretch of river, is some of the finest big water rafting in the state of Alaska, remote and untouched, the Tana truly gives you the exclusive feeling of it being you, the rapids, and the wilderness for miles around. Ferrying to river right and after a lengthy scout of the first three drops, we are off to see what the day brings. With 10 miles of Class III & IV whitewater ahead, we are ready for excitement! After a full day of excitement, there are plenty of river stories told over dinner and campfire tonight!
After merging with the Chitina River we arrive at Jakes Bar, a historic cabin & airstrip, we begin the process of getting ready for the plane. All of our gear gets broken down, wrapped up, and ready for the pilots to load back on to their airplanes. If our packing beats the pilots arrival, there are numerous great trails & open meadows to explore! Want to spruce up prior to flying back to “civilization?” There is a Sauna to fire up on site as well! After arriving back in McCarthy and completing the post trip routine, we will enjoy a cooked meal in town to celebrate the completion of our adventure.
After one last breakfast in McCarthy, it is time to depart to Anchorage. After many heart felt goodbyes between guides and guests, Great Land Adventures leads the beautiful journey back to Anchorage & your Hotel of choice.
